Paul Butterworth was brought up in the north of England, his dad was a vicar and his mum a drama teacher. At 18 he headed south to the Central School of Speech and Drama, London. He graduated in 1977 and after a short spell in theatre had his first TV job in 1979 playing a traffic cop in Coronation Street. He has worked continuously in British film and TV ever since. You may have seen him as Barry in The Full Monty, or more recently as Richard in Richard Eyre's Allelujah and Michael Ellacott in Strike.
In October 2024 he filmed a beautifully written two hander scene with Semantha Morton for the new Daniel Day-Lewis film Anenome as well as a TV comedy pitch playing Colin the office manager directed by Fabia Martin.
Paul Butterworth is based in Cambridge these days which gives him easy access to both London and the north.
If you are a director or producer in need of an older northern actor and a safe pair of hands, then he would would be grateful if you would consider him.
Paul Butterworth is a full voting BAFTA member.
He holds a BA in English and History from Leeds Beckett University (1988) and BA (Hons) Painting 2:1 from the University for the Creative Arts (2024).
