British Character Actor | Film, Television & Theatre

With nearly five decades of experience, Yorkshire-born actor Paul Butterworth has appeared in character roles in films such as The Full Monty, the BBC/HBO series Strike, and Richard Eyre’s Allelujah.

Paul trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in the 1970s and earned a Combined Studies degree from Leeds Beckett University in the 1980s.

Alongside acting, he maintains a parallel visual arts practice and was awarded a BA in Painting by the University for the Creative Arts in 2024.

Reflections on a Career in Acting

In a recent conversation with Cambridge Chronicles, I reflected on nearly five decades of working as an actor — from The Full Monty to British television — including the realities of sustaining a career over time, treating small roles with the same seriousness as leads, being cut from finished work, and balancing acting with life as an artist.
